This is the last of the five commandments. It’s hard to get this across – you will have heard this countless time before, probably in highly inappropriate contexts. And then it might seem trivial, worthless even. You don’t realise this is the switch that makes the lights come on. You can’t know how it feels to remove the blocks and bars that held you back for so long.
But there’s one thing you’ve got to do first, and that is, you must let go of all resentments and grudges you may still nurture. They are only hurting you, so why hold on to them? Let them all go. Forgive all those who have wronged you. Write it down on a bit of paper: “I forgive so and so for the things s/he did to me”. Hold nothing back, whatever you hold on to will bar you from moving on.
Then say the words “Thank you God”. Even if you don’t mean it at first, just hear yourself say it. Now say it louder and louder. Try this: “Thank you God for making me, (your name), born on (your birthday), at (your place of birth)”. Then go on to thank God for all the loving, beautiful, kind, generous people and places and things that have helped to make you what you are today. Once you start, you’ll find there is so much to be thankful for you can’t stop. By the time you’ve finished you’ll feel terrific. Don’t believe me? Try it!
I’m indebted to the writing of Jonathan Waxman in “Heavens Register” for some of this. His web site is down temporarily, but go and Google for it later. A wonderful effervescent mix of sublime and slightly nutty, I recommend it.
Those who have read this far, I hope this has helped.
All the best, Cliff
